I’m a writer, public health specialist, and policy enthusiast.
I appreciate heartfelt opinions and beliefs about solving our addiction crisis, but I’m more convinced by evidence, research and data-driven decisions. We all need to acknowledge what works and what doesn’t – and admit when we don’t really know.
As a writer and advocate, I focus on issues related to recovery from addiction and harm reduction. I love writing about recovery because I get to talk to the most amazing and inspiring people. I love writing about harm reduction because it’s really at the heart of public health – keeping people safe in their lives, promoting wellness, and preventing further harm.
My recovery advocacy started in Maine and now is centered in Virginia, where I’m a member of the Virginia Recovery Advocacy Project. I maintain strong ties with Maine’s recovery community, and I’m the president of the Maine Association of Recovery Residences.

“If you know of a loved one, friend, co-worker, neighbor – really any human being – struggling with substance use disorder but don’t know how to help them, this book will explain how to be an ally and give the support that might just save a life. I wish I had had the knowledge contained in this book during my law enforcement career and when I realized my daughter was struggling with opioid use disorder. It would have changed my approach and made a positive difference.”
